Imagine you’ve worked tirelessly to achieve a good lifestyle and secure a fortune, only to face an unexpected event that forces you to leave everything behind and flee your country to escape oppressive rule. It may sound unrealistic, but this is the reality for Sooma Aslami, a human rights activist from Afghanistan. After the collapse of Afghanistan and the resurgence of the Taliban, she had to leave her country empty-handed to start a new life.
Today marks three years since the Taliban took control, and the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, particularly for women and girls who are deprived of basic human rights like education, work, and personal freedom. In an interview with WAEN, Ms. Sooma expressed her deep despair over the worsening conditions in Afghanistan, especially for women, and shared her thoughts on possible solutions to combat authoritarianism in the country and bring about change.
WAEN remains committed to listening to experts like Ms. Sooma and taking action to combat extremism and authoritarianism. We invite you to join us in this mission. Watch the interview and let’s start taking action to bring about meaningful change.
