Case Studies on Extremist Movements in South and Central Asia

The World Anti-Extremism Network (WAEN) invites scholars, researchers, and practitioners to submit abstracts for a new series of six in-depth, high-quality case studies examining extremist movements across Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. This initiative aims to generate original, rigorous analysis that can serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, educators, think tanks, and professionals working at the intersection of security, governance, and civic engagement. Selected case studies will contribute to a deeper understanding of extremist dynamics and offer practical insights for designing informed and effective responses.

Applicants are encouraged to examine a wide range of movements, including but not limited to the Taliban, Haqqani Network, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Jamaat-ud-Dawa, Hizb ut-Tahrir, Ansar-e Hezbollah, Jaish ul-Adl, Jundallah, ISKP, and Al-Qaida. Comparative, thematic, and country-specific approaches are all welcome.

WAEN will select six outstanding abstracts, and selected authors will be invited to develop full case studies (3,000–4,000 words) following a structured template. The final case studies will be published in English, ensuring broader accessibility and impact.

In addition to receiving an honorarium, selected scholars will be also invited to present their case studies at the Toronto Democracy Forum in Toronto, Canada or other regional and international events.

Submission Details:

Applicants are required to submit a 200-word abstract through the application form no later than May 30, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET). Selected candidates will be notified of the outcome of their submission by June 10, 2026.
