Democracy Frontlines

Keynotes from Global Voices

Hear leading voices from across the world reflecting on how democracy comes under pressure and is constantly reshaped in real time, from internal tensions to rising polarization and external influence. Drawing on lived experience, close observation of political change, and civic response, these perspectives reveal democracy shifting across contexts. Together, they offer a clear global view of democracy in motion today.

Panels & Lecture Series on Power, Resistance & Change

Step into a fast-moving dialogue exchange where activists, legal experts, policy specialists, and civil society leaders engage directly with ideas and assumptions about authoritarianism and its impact on democratic life, from legal resistance to civic action and institutional reform. Followed by a charged lecture series that pulls you deeper into how authoritarian systems expand, how societies push back, and how resilience is built across very different realities, all unfolding as one continuous space of debate, insight, and lived experience.

Research Presentations & Group Discussions

How does research come alive beyond the page?

Research takes center stage as scholars and practitioners share original work on civil resistance, authoritarianism, transnational repression, democratic erosion, and community resilience across different contexts. This is not a passive setting, participants dive into interactive group discussions where research findings are tested, challenged, and reworked on the spot, turning research into collective momentum for action.

Celebrating Courage That Moves Democracies Forward

From conviction to real-world change, the Linda Whetstone Award for Freedom and Human Rights honors individuals whose bold leadership and unwavering courage advance freedom, defend human rights, and challenge extremism and authoritarianism, recognizing work that strengthens democratic values around the world. Presented annually at the Prosperity Dinner during the Toronto Democracy Forum, it stands as a powerful moment celebrating those that transform commitment into impact and ideas into lasting change.

A Global Network in Action

Connections That Go Beyond the Forum

Since its inception, the Toronto Democracy Forum has successfully brought together over 300 researchers and participants from more than 20 countries across its previous editions, creating a dynamic platform where ideas, experiences, and strategies are actively exchanged in response to authoritarianism and democratic erosion. What participants take home goes beyond the forum itself, knowledge, connections, and collaborations that continue to grow, shaping an ongoing network of democracy defenders working across borders.
Liberal values are not ends in themselves, but tools to allow people to pursue higher ends; values that pertain to what it truly means to pursue 'the good life'.
