From Mali to Jerusalem: Inside WAEN’s May Newsletter

The latest edition of the World Anti-Extremism Network’s May Newsletter explores escalating human rights concerns and shrinking civic space across multiple regions. This month’s issue examines rising violence in Mali, increasing hostility toward Christians in Jerusalem, executions and political repression in Iran, crackdowns on journalists in Algeria and DR Congo and pressure on civil society in Tunisia. The newsletter also highlights rising antisemitic violence in the United States and fears of expanding transnational authoritarian pressure following the suspension of RightsCon in Zambia.

This edition also features research presented at the Toronto Democracy Forum 2025 by Muhammad Anwar on nonviolent civic resistance in Pakistan. In addition, we spotlight a powerful article by an International Human Rights Certificate Program graduate examining the erasure of girls’ education in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

Stay informed and stand in solidarity with global human rights.
